Abstract:  THE LOST DECORATIONS OF PINTURICCHIO IN 15TH CENTURY ROMAN PALACES During the second half of the fifteenth century, Pinturicchio decorated many Roman palaces. Although most of these decorations have been lost to subsequent restorations and modifications, existing fragments on ceilings and vaults as well as documentary evidence have allowed us to reconstruct the general motifs of this artist’s decorations and evaluate their innovative content. The first signs of modern landscape painting emerge from the Innocent VIII’s “palazzetto del Belvedere”, while the loggia of Giuliano della Rovere’s palace as SS. Apostoli provides us with an example of the comparison of biblical and pagan heroes and the moral exemplum virtutis theme. In the “sala dei mesi” (“room of the months”) of Domenico della Rovere’s palace on Via della Conciliazione we can admire an unusual cycle of zodiac signs. The cycle presents unconventional iconography of the months, as well as myths pertaining to the zodiac. In particular, this theme would be developed further during the next century. The “lost” apartment of Alexander VI at Castel Sant’Angelo depicted the salient events in the lives of Alexander Vi an Charles VIII as well as many portraits of their contemporaries. This was a prelude to the great profane art cycles in sixteenth century Rome.
