Abstract: The study narrates the urban and landscape evolution of the area formerly known as
Valle dell’Inferno through the description of the transformations that brought about the current
arrangement. Using the hill of Monte Ciocci as an ideal observation point of this evolution, the
author describes how the particular geomorphology of the area and its topographical position in
relation to the city has influenced the methods of building and infrastructure construction (villas,
cemeteries, furnaces, military, mobility and leisure infrastructure). The essay also analyzes the
consequences produced by the realization of these structures, both in terms of conservation and
modification of the local landscape as compared to some events of the urban history of Rome. The
study it’s completed by a bibliography on individual episodes of urban transformation considering
as well the evolution in the toponyms of the area.
