Abstract: The purpose of the essay is to depict the historical evolution of Valle Aurelia between XVI
and XX century. The deep link between landscape and human activities highlights the evolution
of this area. Through the historical cartography, it is possible to detect the morphological structure
of the area called Valle dell’Inferno, near the Vatican hill. The valley lies between the raised
areas of Monti della Creta and the property of Pineta Sacchetti, in which the monumental Villa
Sacchetti was raised. Due to the geological character of the valley - a clay-rich territory –, from
mid-nineteenth century to after the Second World War many brick-kilns gradually developed in
the area. The brick’s production and the Borghetto of the workers gave an identity to a territory
that in the last forty years has completely modified the urban and social structure of Valle Aurelia,
particularly after the plan for the redevelopment of the working-class suburbs – promoted by the
town council led by Argan in 1976 – and the demolition of the Borghetto (1981).
