Abstract: The Collegio Capranica in Rome, founded by Cardinal Domenico Capranica in 1457, is one of the longest-lived educational institutions in the capital. It was created in response to the need for a better formation of secular clergy based on the model of university colleges and was influenced by the cultural impulses of humanism and the spiritual ferment of the devotio moderna. Its Constitutions developed on these two axes and with additions and updates, they remained throughout the modern age. They helped to perpetuate the grounds of the origins, that only a deep and solid theological training could ensure a proper priestly ministry.
