Abstract: ASPECTS OF ROMAN ARTISTIC ASSOCIATIONS AFTER 1870 Following the 20th of September 1870, Roman artists were aware that deep reaching changes were underway and that they had to find new patrons that would substitute the Church, the Roman aristocracy and foreigners. The International Artistic Association was founded in order to replace the traditional “Società degli amatory e cultori delle belle arti” and the “Congregazione Artistica dei Virtuosi del Pantheon” that would soon disappear on account of their close ties with the former government. However, notwithstanding the fears of the Roman Artists, the “Società degli amatory e cultori” managed to integrate itself in the new state as a sponsor of Roman art and participated in the artistic congresses of Milan (1872) and Naples (1877). Furthermore, in the course of a few years, the work of the art lovers and the “Associazione artistica internazionale” led to the creation of the “Museo Artistico Industriale” and the construction of the “Palazzo delle Esposizioni”. Other associations soon joined in the effort to promote art; these included the “Associazione degli acquarellisti” and cooperative of painters, sculptors, architects and other fine arts.
