Abstract:  THE CAPITAL AND THE PRESS: ROMAN DAILIES AND THE CREATION OF A PUBLIC NATIONAL OPINION   After having become the capital of the Kingdom of Italy in 1870, Rome was involved in a vast political project that aimed to transform it into a national cultural production center along the lines of many other European capitals. However, the failure of this project did not stop the city from widening its cultural panorama. Any important trend that was to have a national valence was initiated in Rome. The capital also become an important editorial reality in which new formulas were experimented in order to attract a vaster readership. Although in terms of control and censorship, Fascism relaunched Rome’s pedagogical-cultural role as the seat and center for the promotion of the <<New State>> and brought all editorial activity to the capital. However, the artificial character of this production, which had no real economic and cultural backing, made it a short-lived experience which was significantly reduced after World War II.
