Abstract: NATIONAL GOVERNMENT, MONARCHICAL ENVIRONMENTS AND CATHOLIC MOVEMENTS IN LEOPOLDO TORLONIA’S CAPITOLINE ADMINISTRATION The peculiarity of Rome as capital after the unification of Italy was exalted by the Capitoline administration headed by Leopoldo Torlonia (1882-1887). During this period, many new relations were interwoven between social and political figures, both at the local and the national level. The monarchical-liberal Torlonia administrations helped bring together the governing class and the Roman aristocracy by means of a <<good town government>> and the creation of a sort <<res pubblica>> without parties – which allowed the Catholics to participate – in order to ease the economic and social development of the capital. The Roman aristocracy, that had been divided since 1870, found a common role in the city government in the syndicate of the young mayor. ( The mayor had been educated in a Catholic milieu, but was introduced to the Royal household before being nominated for the administrative elections by the liberal party.) The noble class was encouraged by the need to nationalize oh which the monarchy was well aware and the participation in political life that the Vatican wanted for the Roman laymen.
