Abstract: This article aims to illustrate the origins, construction, development and decline of the Central Warehouses of Rome. The paper aims to throw light on the history of one of the most important hubs of the Ostiense area, which was well known as the main industrial area of the city in the early twentieth century. Beginning with the development of the modern Central Warehouses in a national and international context, we then proceed to reconstruct the proposals and projects put forward (from 1870 onwards) to give the new capital of Italy a vast and efficient system of storage. Next we will analyze the conditions which influenced the decision to place the Warehouses in the Ostiense area. The study examines aspects related to the building of the complex, and presents a picture of the activities undertaken by the Society for the Central Warehouses of Rome, with the intention of highlighting the principle elements of the life of the company (1912-1984).
