Abstract: Starting from the review of certain documents detailing a curious controversy on the coloring of the sign that the Jews were forced to wear during the Jubilee with renewed rigor of Benedict XIII (1725), the essay analyzes the problem of color and shape of the Jewish pilleum, beginning from the requirements of Paolo IV and Pio V, and leading to the identification and the iconological analysis of the portrayal of the Jewish figure in paintings and decorative evolutions, not only Roman. The essay examples the case of Asan from Pesaro, a Levantine Jew who became a Turk, to in the social control of the religious minorities. Finally, after painting a picture of the Jewish figure using the various iconographies in which he is displayed, the existence and the function of sacred representation also for Jewish and catecumens is considered and analyzed, with an emphasis on urban realities particularly prone to conversion topic (Santa Maria ai Monti, S. Pitro in Vincoli).
