Abstract: SURVEYORS, ARCHITECTS AND ENGINEERS IN THE 18TH CENTURY PAPAL STATE: FROM PRIVATE PROFESSION TO PUBLIC WORK By the end of 1817, the first election of technical personnel for the administration of public works took place in the Papal State. Surveyors, architects and engineers residing in the territories of the Papal State sent their curricula to the State. The curricula were checked by the Arts Council and the filed in an archive. These documents represent a very interesting source with which to study the evolution of technical professions related to territorial development over crucial restoration period following the French period. On the basis of this documentation, and through the verification with coeval legislative sources, we are able to reconstruct the fundamental phases of the scientific training for surveyors, architects and engineers, their qualification and the careers they gave rise to on the hub of the old and new regimes, as well as the institution of the Corpo degli Ingegneri pontifici di acque e strade and the technical training schools opened to instruct public engineers. The data gathered from this source provides us with an initial orientation which allows us to understand the fundamental shift, which had matured during the French period, in the relation between State and technical professions. The study also includes an examination of a few exemplary careers.
