Abstract: The arrival in Rome of the water from the Salone springs in 1570 was an event of vast historic significance. Until now it has been studied largely for its technical-administrative aspects and, because of the many new fountain that were built, for the effect it had on the city’s image. Through the analysis of the registers of the lettere patenti issued by the Pontific Congregation super fontibus and the minutes of the Capitoline Council’s sessions, this study instead explains the procedures for the distribution of the new Acqua Vergine to private citizens. The first section follows the evolution of the procedure for the concession: from the first proposals formulated about 1575, in the years of the construction of the new hydraulic network, up to the time of the first repairs and improvements to the system. The second section illustrates the different types of concession (onerous, gratuitous, contract, compensation for expropriation) and highlights to which subjects each type generally applied. The third section presents a general picture of the acqua di Salone’s distribution as of 1631, based on the analysis of a survey of the users conducted during that year for purposes of special taxation. This document is transcribed in its entirety and commented upon.
