SPEZIALI, SPAGIRICI, DROGHIERI AND CIARLATANI. THERAPEUTICAL POSSIBILITIES IN ROMA BETWEEN THE 17TH AND THE 18TH CENTURIES: This research project analyzes the different jobs which between the 17th and the 18th centuries were characterized by the production and commercialization of medicinal products in Rome. In particular, we have examined the history of the Speziali and their corporation, the legislation which regulated their activity, apprenticeships and qualifications, as well as relations with proto-doctors and the medical college and the relative subdivision of tasks between the two main corporations operating in the health sector. Moreover, we have also investigated other professional groups which operated in the same sector, although beyond the boundaries of “official” medicine. These include the droghieri who sold war materials and medicinal substances directly to the public as well as the so-called Ciarlatani. Charlatans, who had a license from the camera or from a proto-doctor, rpduced and sold products which they invented and publicized and which were often very popular. This situation of pharmacies during the 18th century anche the transformation from generical to “iatrochemical” medical is also examined.
