Abstract: The places of hospitality in Rome. Tradition and modernity in the accomodation and tourist facilities between the nineteenth and twentieth century    The contribution analyses the evolution of reception facilities and tourism during Rome’s first forty years as the capital. Using data obtained from a number of commercial and tourist guides on the city, we have reconstructed the increase in the number of hotels and the locations of the hotels, inns and tourist agencies in the urban area. The Roman topography of hotels is based on historic cartography for 1874, 1894 and 1914. It shows the formation of new areas of attraction and hotel concentration as well as the traditional ones gravitating around the papal city. The economy involving these services keeps apace with the city’s urban development, the changes in transportation, the population growth and the arrival after the ‘70s of a new bureaucracy and group of immigrants. The modem hotels spring up along new boulevards and in the modern quarters growing around the station or other strategic hubs. At the same time, many of the establishments in the old city centre dating from prior centuries remain active, outlining an image of a city that maintains its ties to the past while continuing to develop.
