Abstract: Commerce and investments in Rome at the end of the eighteenth century the «Bertolli-Di Pietro» Company    The «Bertolli-Di Pietro» Company was founded in Rome in 1778 and ceased to operate about ten years later in 1786. The judicial affair, that followed its collapse, came to a conclusion in 1794 and is documented in three large dossier to be found in the ASR. The bankruptey of the company marked the ruin of the "best commercial enterprise" in Rome in those years. The protagonists were a rich and enterprising tradesman, Domenico Bertolli, and the well known country merchant, contractor and financier, Panfilo Di Pietro who worked in Rome during the French and Restoration period and about whom we now have a great deal of new documentation. The company’s annual turnover, concerned primarily with commerce in spices, fish and wheat, can be calculated at a good 200.000 scudi and at 60.000 the amount remaining to be collected: figures that would indicate an intense and busy commercial activity. The basic cause of the company’s failure was the impossibility of collecting these outstanding debts. The commercial enterprise also encompassed France, the ports in North Europe, Turkey, England. The present study fits into the most recent historiography on Rome in the eighteenth and early nineteenth century which has contributed to modifying or at least attenuating a generally negative evaluation of the refomnist movement in the Pontifical State.
