Abstract: ANTONIOFRANCESCHI AND THE RELIGIOUS POLICY OF THE FIRST ROMAN REPUBLIC
The first months of 1799 correspond to the most radical phase of the Roman’s Republic religious policy. Strong provisions on themes such as the civic oath, preaching, religious ordainments, the control of prelate nominations that, together with the interventions in the educational field, mark a development in regards to the measures adopted in the previous months and witness of a will to reduce the influence that the ecclesiastical world had upon the public opinion, rather than actually implementing reforms regarding the Church. At this time, the Minister of the Interiors is the physician Antonio Franceschi. The summary reconstruction of his figure confirms the anticlerical character of his own idea and sheds light upon his role, which up to now had been considered minor to the one of his renowned colleague Claudio Della Valle. Franceschi’s sons and, particularly, his daughter, the cultured Caterina Franceschi Ferrucci, will participate in the Risorgimento’s risings following up into their father’s political engagement though in a much moderate fashion in abiding to Gioberti’s positions.
