Abstract: THE ROMAN ARTISTS AND THE POLISH COURT AT THE TIME OF STANISLAO AUGUSTO PONIATOWKY (1764-1795)
Marcello Bacciarelli held numerous posts during the reign of Stanislao Augusto Poniatowski: besides being the master painter at court, he was also Director of the Royal School of Painting, responsible for the Royal Gallery and one of the king’s principal art adviser. Bacciarelli’s own, unpublished, correspondence with other fellow Italian artists (presently kept in Warsaw’s National Library) stands as a witness to his activities. Amongst these artists was Giovan Battista Ponfreni who furnished Bacciarelli with a considerable number of sketches and drawings belonging to their old maestro Marco Benefial. The contacts between the two artists were very intense in the years going from 1773 to 1776. Ponfreni’s letters reveal important information regarding the paintings existing on the Roman antiquarian market at the time. In addition to that, they even shed more light on the very figure of Ponfreni, proving to have been the disciple that kept most of his maestro’s paintings and sketches. After his stay in Rome in 1787. Bacciarelli’s correspondence with Roman artists intensified. Three presently unpublished letters by Domenico Corvi are particularly interesting. Besides the information relative to the works that Corvi sent to Poland (two fine art performances and the painting depicting the Supper of Emaus), they speak about the painter’s own social promotional strategies.
