Abstract: THE COLLEGIO ROMANO: 1824-1873
This study moves along two complementary investigative lines. In the Collegio’s external history: its restitution to the Jesuits (which had been vaguely promised since 1814, but was not carried out until 1824 by Leone XII); the constant efforts to recruit the best professors, among whom the first rector, Taparelli; the dispersal of 1848 and its causes; its return in 1850; and the new dispersals of 1870 and 1873. With regard to the Collegio’s internal history: the anti-Rosminian quarrel is summarised; the contribution to the exegesis of Patrizi; the doubts of Ballarini to the doctrines of Alfonso; the important contribution the Jesuits made to the victory of ultramontanism, which culminated in 1854 and 1870.
