Abstract:  THE COLLEGIO ROMANO. THE INSTITUTION, ITS STRUCTURES, AND ITS FIRST CENTURY This contribution concerns the creation of the Collegio Romano by Ignazio di Loyola, as well as its aims. After two years as a humanities Collegium Trilingue, it became a university with the institution of a faculty of theology and philosophy. The novelty of this institution, which became a center for intellectual-ecclesiastical education and innovated the teaching of Letters in papal Rome, is emphasized. The academic and doctrinal orientations of the two faculties are also indicated, the importance attributed to the sciences, the novelty of moral theology as a distinct science and the controversistic theology against Protestants. Finally, the most important professors are briefly remembered.
