Abstract: Porta Nuova, executed during the second half of 16th century, constitutes a remarkable episode for numerous functional, symbolic and celebratory reasons and for the exceptional sculptural character, bound to the triumphal rhetoric of Charles V. The different yards, which have followed one another, outline a rather complex and original event, strictly linked to those of via Toledo and of the Royal Palace (to which Porta Nuova is connected) and full of personalities and external contributions. The role played by royal engineer, Antonio Salamone, and the analogies with some solutions which have been adopted in other contemporaneous executions, but also with carving models contribute to characterize the project and
to set it in a wider context and in a sphere cultural international influence of technicians and officials into Spanish Crown’s service.
Keywords: Porta Nuova; Palermo models; royal engineer; Antonio Salamone.
