Abstract: This study examines the activity of the Società Generale Immobiliare (The General Real
Estate Society) in the years that spanned the transition from fascist to republican government
in Italy. This period was marked by the acquisition of a controlling share of the Society by
the Administration of the Property of the Holy See at a time when both organisations were
under the chairmanship of Bernardino Nogara. He was chosen by Pius XI to handle the negotiations
with Mussolini which were aimed at finalising the financial agreement attached to
the Lateran Treaty, and to organise the economic resources that the State was to transfer to
the Holy See. Bernardino Nogara was the only person who could have performed this role in
view of the many appointments that he had received from the Church and from the Italian
government which made him a trusted figure for both parties.
