Abstract:  JUDICIARY REFORMS IN ROME DURING THE LATE SEVENTEETH CENTURY   The aim of this paper is to provide a general overview of the reforms which profoundly modified the administration of justice in the curia tribunals during the last decades of the seventeenth century. A consequence of the diffusion of nepotism, especially during the age of Urban VIII, was that the papal judicial system had become extremely complex and rather inefficient. This led to pope Innocent XI and then Pope Innocent XII to create two special congregations whoch achieved important results. These included the proper definition of the jurisdictions of the various tribunals, the simplification of the procedures and a massive reduction of the clergy’s judicial privileges.
