Abstract: AN ANTIQUES EXPERT IN SEVENTEENTH CENTURY ROME: PIETRO ROSSINI DA PESARO The “Mercurio Errante” guide to Rome was published from 1693 to 1789 in eleven different editions and various re-prints. The “Mercurio Errante” was very different from any other guidebook as the author, Pietro Rossini, focused his attention on a selected group of Roman palaces and villas and described every detail minutely. The need to cayy out a critical evaluation of the author has enabled us to understand the succession of the various editions in greater detail. In fact, only the first (1693) and the second (1700) editions were edited by Pietro Rossini. Rossini’s presence in Rome is documented starting from 1670. At the time he was a famulus at the service of Mons. Giovanni Gualtiero Slusio from Liegi. Then, Rossini also owned a shop in Piazza di Spagna where he sold antiques to foreigners. Pietro Rossini died in 1702 and left his possessions to his wife and eight sons. His eldest son, Giovanni Pietro, edited all the other editions of the “Mercurio Errante”.
