Abstract:  THE CAMPIDOGLIO AND HIS FINANCES IN YEARS OF CHANGES (1851-1881) This article examines the financial situation of the Campidoglio, the Roman town hall, from 1851 to 1881. In 1870, the “Breccia di Porta Pia” disrupted life in the capital and brought particular disarray to the Campidoglio and its finances. As before 1870 the Curia had controlled the town hall very strictly, the income and expenses registered on the city budgets were not very high. After the city’s unification to the Kingdom of Italy, however, power changed hands and the Campidoglio gained a remarkable importance. Nonetheless, the situation did not improve due to the conflictive relation with the State, which caused considerable problems to the municipal balances and heavy crisis for the economy of the city.
