Abstract:  NOTARIES FOR ROADS AND WATER: XIII-XVI CENTURIES This article deals with the birth of a notary office for the road service officials and the evolution that between the XIII and the XVI centuries transformed it into the “privative” notary office of two important central organism of the Papal State: the roads management office and the super viis, pontibus et fontibus congregation of cardinals. An important step in this process was the “Etsi in cunctarum” constitution of Pope Martin V (1425) which restored the magistri aedificiorum office and stabilized its notary office. Even more important was the institution of the roads management office and the congregation, the road and water notaries prepared, conserved and filed all the documents issued by the officials, who for over three centuries, dealt with the road conditions, the urban layout and the aqueducts of Rome and Papal State. Their importance was the consequence of their correct administration of these sector.
