Abstract: In the last sixty years the Roman suburbs of Ostiense and Testaccio have undergone the final phases of a series of transformations which, in the course of the twentieth century, have converted this strip of suburban Rome first into an industrial area, then a residential quarter, and finally a laboratory for urban renewal. The development of the Eur, which continued energetically after the war, had ramifications for the whole area. The progressive dismantling of pre-war factories was accompanied by a general rise in the age of the population and a decline in the social and economic fabric of the areas flanking the via Ostiense; meanwhile the urban development which spread out from the modern throughway of via Cristoforo Colombo gave rise to new residential services. The last phase of development, promoted by the civic administration, began in the 1990s and continues to this day. This project is aimed at a revival of industrial archeology and a renewal of the area through a series of initiatives with a strong reliance on cultural and social values and modern urban design.
