Abstract:  PARDON WITHOUT PILGRIMAGE. FRANCE, THE 1751 JUBILEE AND ROME In December 1750, at the end of the Holy year, Benedict XIV extended the benefits of the Jubilee to entire Catholic world and fixed the procedures which would allow faithful all over the world to attain indulgences. Breaking with the tradition according to which only those dioceses that had explicitly requested it were granted the benefits of the Jubilee, this personal initiative by Benedict XIV reinforced the supreme authority of the pontiff and the international character of his papacy. The article analyzes the way in which this Bull of extension was enacted, in France during the reign of Louis XV, both with respect to the political sphere and, especially, with regard to the delicate ecclesiastical geography, still under the influence of the Constitutio Unigenitus. By means of a random sampling of the provisions enacted by bishops in order to attain the Jubilee benefits, Dompnier highlights the doctrinal and spiritual orientations of the French diocese. What emerges is not only the lack of a Gallican reaction, but above all the moral weight of a pope who <<was inspired by the holy rules>>, operated because of a <<profound conversion>> and ended up compacting the rigorous clergy with the more indulgent parts of the Church including Jansenists.
