Abstract:  CIVILITE’ AND HOLY YEARS. THE HOLY DEED OF LODGING PILGRIMS IN THE JUBILEE CHRONICLES (1575-1650) The new wave of research on the origins of civilitas in modern Europe and recent contributions on disciplining in the Catholic area constitute the historiographic reference point from which this essay starts out. By examining a series of printed texts and handwritten reports on the jubilees celebrated between 1575 and 1650 and focusing on the objectives and contents of these documents, the author analyzes the relationship that exists between the transformation of charity and welfare organizations in Papal Rome and changes in social behavior. The sources, that meticulously record the protocol and etiquette set by the institutions and families of the Roman curia for the men and women who came to Rome for the jubilee, are very interesting as they reveal a twofold need. On the one hand, there was need to discipline the masses of pilgrims according to the design of society which was elaborating its moral canons as a hierarchical social group, on the other, there were the networks of relations set up by the elite to provide a global perspective of themselves.
