Abstract: 15TH CENTURY ORNAMENTS, VESTMENTS AND MARBLE MONUMENTS IN ST. PETER’S BASILICA: DESTRUCTION AND CONSERVATION St. Peter’s Basilica underwent extensive restoration and a complete reconstruction between the second half of the 15th century and the first decade of the 17th. Although many studies have concerned these architectural aspects, very little research has been dedicated to the significant changes, as well as the destruction, that the riche decorative work that adorned the interior of the basilica underwent. This article reviews the opinion of Bramante’s contemporaries on his work, the subsequent criteria for the selection of the works that were preserved, and the changes, additions and repositionings. The appendix provides a list of the fifteenth century sculptures extracted from the writings of Alfarano and, in part, Grimaldi.
