Abstract: Information about the great fortune enjoyed by Claude Lorrain and the high price obtained for his canvases can be easily found in his biographies. However this information is substantiated by a very limited number of payments, about 5-6% of his vast production and until now there has been no analysis of banking documents. This article is dedicated to these documents, and includes a transcription and an examination of the account that Lorrain maintained at the Banco di Santo Spirito for more than fifty years, from 1630 until his death in 1682. In addition to a precise knowledge of the painter's financial state, the analysis of his bank deposits has made it possible to discover the timing and the nature of his investments in the so called «luoghi di monte». Through a study of this common saving’s procedure, the relations between Claude and a number of his patrons, such as Angelo Giori and the Colonna are clarified and extended from the artistic realm to the economic one and reveal, in the case of the Colonna, an exclusivity ofa social nature. Considering his bank transactions and investments, published here for the first time, it becomes clear that Lorrain enjoyed a constantly growing fortune from the 1640s until his death. Between securities and deposits the final amount reached 5.500 scudi. Referenze
