Abstract: Sanitation and public health in Rome in the ministry's investogation at the end of the nineteenth century      Rome underwent an enormous demographic growth in the last thirty years of the nineteenth century. This brought the city's population from approximately 244,000 in 1871 to more than 469,000 in 1901. As a result the supervision work on the part of the capital’s public health authorities became extremely demanding in order to guarantee the efficiency of the city’s sanitary infrastucture (sewers, drinking water conduits), the cleaning of the urban area, the efficiency of vaccination, disinfection, surveillance, food provisioning services, etc. «Sanitary control» problems related to the Rome’s urban growth at the end of the nineteenth century can be well understood by studying the results of an investigation on sanitary-health care begun by the Ministry of the Interior in 1899. Such results were never made public. Using this and other contemporary material we have tried to define Rome’s sanitary situation in the period by examining specific aspects such as the problem of pollution of the soil and built areas; the degree of efficiency of the sewers and drinking-water systems; the workings of the medical-health care services; the incidence of contagious illnesses and comparing them with the public health issues present during the same period in other cities in Lazio and, in general, other large Italian cities.
