Abstract: This essay analyses the typology of the statutes of Rome's charitable institutions under the old order. Between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries a change occurred in the legal organization of the statutes: charitable organizations gradually superseding the companies, brotherhoods, or colleges that had originally founded them, and in some cases still managed them. The figure of the cardinal patron was of great importance, denoting the central position of the curia in the control of the large charitable institutions. The subsequent regulation of the statutes was to change radically again under the Napoleonic regime when unified regulations would be issued by the Ministry of the Interior in Paris.
