Abstract:   «A LITERARY CONSPIRACY». THE END OF THE RELIGIOUS WARS IN FRANCE BETWEEN SATIRE AND POLITICS The Satyre Ménippée, the celebrated political pamphlet from the end of the French religious wars, has earned a lasting place in French political culture. The aim of this article is to look into the origins and the 16th century meaning of the “conspiratorial” interpretation of his lampoon with the events that prompted it. As a starting point: those of the State-General of the League, celebrated between January and August of 1593, which brought about a decisive confrontation between the supporters of reconcilement around a French king and those who favored a conservative solution, maintaining the unity of the Catholic religion. The study carries out a comparative analysis of the caricatured portrayals presented by the Satyre Ménippée and the information and political considerations found in the correspondence exchanged in that crucial situation by the nephew of Pope Clement VIII, Pietro Aldobrandini, and the papal legate in France, Filippo Sega, who became, against his will, one of the main figures of the Satyre Ménippée.
