Abstract: THE HOLY SEE AND THE GALILEO ISSUE: ROMAN SECOND READINGS OF A FAMOUS CONDEMNATION
Three years from the official opening of the Faith Doctrine Congregation’s archives, one may attempt to discuss the evolution of the Roman theological teachings faculty’s attitude toward Galileo Galilei’s condemnations (1633). Published as well as unpublished sources allow to analyze certain crucial episodes along the way going from the proscription of Copernicus’ doctrine in 1616 up to John Paul II’s speech in relation to the Papal Commission on Studies’ presentation of the final report concerning the Tolemaic-Copernican controversy. The diachronic approach allows to highlight the decisive importance of a specific theological criteriology that has brought about famous verdicts and which has been kept as the predominant orientation of the Holy See well into the midst of the XX century. Such a long-lasting phenomenon has obliged the Roman theological teachings faculty, which found itself before a completely transformed situation given the definitive revolution in the field of astronomy, to suspend the prohibition, at first, de facto, ad, later, de jure, of heliocentrism, without, nonetheless, having, to this day, an effective critical comparison with the events of the XVII century.
