Abstract: PALACE AND SHRINES: DECLINE OF THE LITTORIO CULT The Palazzo del Littorio, seat of The National Fascist Party headquarters, originally planned for via dell’Impero in 1933 and then for viale Aventino in 1937, was also intended to house the permanent exhibit of the Fascism Revolution and the Shrine to the Revolution’s Dead. A single magnificent building would have displayed the strength of the party, the foundations of its history and, in the Shrine, the centre of the Fascist political religion. However, the project for the building was transferred to the Foro Mussolini, then remained uncompleted and in 1940 became the seat of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs while the National Fascist Party headquarters was located in a less important building. The Shrine, situated within the building, was inaugurated on October 28, 1941 and although a small formal masterpiece designed by Luigi Moretti, it was modest and restricted in its functions. All of these elements denote a progressive symbolic and operative decline in the Littorio cult.
