Abstract: A LIFE APART. THE JEWISH COMMUNITY DURING THE FASCIST WAR
The three years from June of 1940 to September of 1943, in which Fascist Italy fought the war at the side of the Germans, could be considered years of house arrest for the Jews of Rome. They were subjected to persecution by laws that excluded them normal civic life and separated them from the rest of the nation. In those three years, little remembered as they crushed between the trauma of racial laws and the nightmare of Nazi occupation, the Jewish community had to face arduous trials such as harassment by the regime and an enormous increase of the poor following forced unemployment. And in doing this, it succeeded in recovering a cohesion that had been lost at the beginning of the racial campaign and was able to deal with more important problems.
