Abstract: The question of a unified wholesale food market in post unification Rome    My article covers the complex and relevant question of the necessary reorganization of the food provisionary system of the capital, undertaken in years immediately after the Breach of Porta Pia. In particular, it deals with the acquisition by the City of Rome of the necessary lands to build the Rome General Market. The reconstruction of this fundamental step for the creation of a unified market in via Ostiense has been facilitated by a careful study of cadastre sources. These documents have proved important for their information regarding ownership and the nature of the funds.The peculiar structure of the “entries” of the defunct Rural Cadastre of Rome and the Province of Rome (1870-1952) has allowed me to identify the transfer of separate funds belonging to the Fajella and Torlonia heirs, funds that would have contributed to a marked productive development in the area of Ostiense in the first decade of the twentieth century.
