Abstract: Territory, population and owners in the Ostiense area (XVIII-XIX centuries)      The contribution examines the transformations of the Ostiense area from two points of view. The first concerns the dynamics connected to the distribution of land on the basis of its use and ownership, ascertained by a comparison between the Pius-Gregorian Cadastre of 1820 and its update in 1870. The second concerns the analysis of demographic phenomena on the basis of parish records. These records make it possible to establish the numbers of the inhabitants in different periods, their socio-professional identity, their place of origin and their distribution between suburb and countryside. In both cases, particular attention has been given to the characteristics of the suburb and the countryside in order to give the clearest possible picture of the relative social and economic disposition in the Roman outskirts immediately preceding the enormous population and building transformations that were to modify the capital in the final decades of the nineteenth century.
