Abstract: THE BOOKS OF AN ARTISTI IN NEO-CLASSICAL ROME
This article analyses the library of Giovanni Pikler, a well-know engraver of semi-precious stones and cameos, who worked in Rome during the second half of the XVIII century. Based on the inventory of the artist’s possessions (Pikler died in the Pontificial capital in 1791), the author reconstructs the artist’s library and the possible uses of the various books. Differently from the great libraries of collectors and bibliophiles, the engraver’s library was above all “utilitarian” and closely related to his professional activity. The library included many books on numismatics and glyptics, as well as Roman History and art history. The presence of Enlightenment works, such as the French Encyclopédie, is very important as it proves the cultural awareness of artists during this period.
