Abstract: THE PONTIFICAL GOLDEN COINS’ INTRINSIC AND EXTRINSIC VALUE This contribution takes into consideration the pontifical golden coins in modern times. It regard a highly complex subject matter given that, during the course of the exchange rate vary in relation to silver coins. In order to clarify this issue, different tables have been elaborated to highlight the technical characteristics of the golden coins so as to determine their intrinsic value and, in relation to their exchange rate, identify their equivalent in current silver coins. In an attempt to understand the actual exchange value of such coins, the resulting data has been implemented in lira according to the gold exchange value of December 31, 2000. The following calculation has permitted to denote the great depreciation incurred by the pontifical currency between the XVI and the XIX centuries.
