Abstract: FACTORIES AT OSTIENSE AT THE TIME OF ITS DECLINE AS AN INDUSTRIAL ZONE The essay brings forward an historical analysis on industrial construction at Ostiense, from the mid 1920’s to the beginning of the 1940’s. The investigation concerns the reasons that allowed the proliferation – notwithstanding the many cries and passed legislations that opposed a further industrial concentration in the area – of a series of plants, as in the cases of the “Vasca nazionale” to implement new naval architectural experiences, the Italian Mechanic Optic Company (società Ottico Meccanica Italiana), and shortly after a parachute-producing company and the Roman branch office of Alfa-Romeo. Between hardly-respected political intentions and urban development plans on the one hand, and interesting urban proposals on the other one, the Ostiense area of the mid 1930’s, at a time when the expansion of the city’s boundaries to the south is established with the project of the Universal Exposition, becomes a truly heated place where construction, especially of factories, is practically impossible. Nonetheless, new plants are built. A brief analysis upon the local post-war situation up to the 1960’s, however, shows that there is a continuous link in the procedures of the construction work mechanism recognizable in such events as the Olympics which serve to display the high degrees of disorganization, if not the very incapacity of the local authorities.
