Abstract: INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT AND URBAN EXPANSION
THE HISTORICAL EVENTS OF THE FIRST INDUSTRIAL AREA (1870-1941)
The essay sets forth a systematic historical and archive-documented tour of the urban/architectonic transformations of the area included between the via Ostiense and Portuense, coinciding with the first industrial and productive zone of Rome, once it became capital of Italy. The historical recounting takes into account the pre-existent situation in the area yet it systematically develops the issues of the very first initiatives geared towards the industrial, productive, and commercial growth, the propelling activities promoted by the Nathan administration (1907-1913) that were meant to increment its reach, and the actions and contradictions that characterized them between the First and the Second World War.
A critical analysis on the period of time which goes from the last world conflict and the actual prospects let to consider how time has worked to construe a new value of appreciation for this vacant industrial site. The ensemble of architectures that made up the capital’s first industries and the technological services today accounts for an extraordinary urban scenario, a landscape of industrial archeology whose potentiality is one of the conditions for mobilizing economic and designing resources. In order to find a solution to this complicated cultural and urban heritage, the hypothesis (on its way to being carried out) to transform it in the future Roman cultural center (The Third University of Rome) seems to be the best way to re-insert the vacant industrial site of Ostiense within the city’s historical patrimony.
