Abstract:  AN ARCHIVAL HISTORY OF THE NATIONAL ARTISTIC BOARDING SCHOOL Founded in 1891, The National Artistic Boarding-School (Pensionato Artistico Nazionale) had the intention of giving young and promising Italian artists the means, through a financial promotion, to perfect themselves in their studies and in the practice of their art. Such institution acted until 1940, when-even if in changed forms –its tasks passed on to the newly born Contemporary Art Bureau. Recently, the need of an archival inquiry on to the subject has come about. The first results of this inquiry served to help in the realization of an exhibition concerning the Boarding-School painting contests. With the tracking down and the analysis of the archive documents completed, displayed herein, are the methods and the possible developments of the archival research as primary tool for the reconstruction of the National Artistic Boarding-School, to analyze the different stages of the contest procedure and of the exhibition sites. It has been possible to gather useful data and information for the minor figures of the artistic production of that time and to try to re-form the corpus, partially dismembered and wasted, of the works related, for various reasons, to this important institution.
