Abstract: ROME AFTER THE COSTRUCTION CRISIS AS SEEN BY EMILE ZOLA
Emile Zola arrives in Rome on October 31st, 1894 accompanied by his wife Alexandrine. His novel Lourdes, the first tome of the series of Trois Villes, obtains its inscription in the Church’s index for being blasphemous. Hence, the coming of the French author in the capital, whence Zola would begin his new setting for the next novel of the trilogy, attracted much attention so much so to enthrall people amidst preoccupation and general curiosity. The writer visits the city and takes a series of notes during his travel that will serve him upon completion of the new novel to portray quite some clichés. Rome, published in 1896, a few excerpts appearing herein reproduced, presently constitutes, notwithstanding the very Latin-like passionate plot that Zola chose to set his novel in, an exceptional historically valuable document. It remains the testimony of an outstanding witness noting the urban transformation that characterize the very first decades of the capital city.
