Abstract: MAINTENCANCE, RESTORATION, AND CONSOLIDATION: THE BANK OF ITALY’S INTERVENTION ON THE JANICULUM AND AT SAN COSIMATO The parceling out of the Janiculum Hill, following the project of architect Giulio DE Angelis, even involved a property, once belonged to the Barberini from Sciarra, that after a series of vicissitudes passed on to the Bank of Italy. The latter did not enact substantial modification to the initial plan, promoting the restoration of the ancient Villa Spada, and subsequently providing for the transfer of all properties. Nonetheless, the grounds at the feet of the hill, the so-called Prati di S. Cosimato, followed a different development as they were rapidly constructed. Still, owned by the Bank as well, the great constructing blocks almost immediately displayed signs of static collapse and structural degradation. The reconstruction of some reinforcements, made possible thanks to archive documents, provides adequate information about the system of construction and restoration employed at the end of the 1800s. It also details a series of services (the planning of a price list , the institution of a special Technical Bureau)) demonstrating the ability of the Bank of Italy even in the field of technical management.
