Abstract: THE BANK OF ITALY AND THE CONSTRUCTION BUSINESS FOR ROME CAPITAL CITY: THE RESEARCH PROJECT The role played by the Bank of Italy in the complex process of growth that the city underwent after 1870, constitutes a fundamental crux in the history of the making of the kingdom’s new capital. The study of document’s, present in the historic Archives of the Bank of Italy, most directly concerned with the city’s urban layout after the construction crisis furnished new and consistent issues open to discussion. After having evaluated the data taken from direct sources, one may rightly come to affirm that the conventions signed between the Bank of Italy and the City Hall of Rome significantly influenced the capital’s building construction. Two reasons support such thesis: the adoption of organizing principles in the production of urban spaces and the ability of interpreting and favoring the city’s transformation, both seemingly belonging more to the policy of the Bank rather than being of those institutions or groups whose duty it was. The consulted archival sources illustrate the temporal sequence of differently combined transactions that led to the construction of new neighborhoods or even portions of the city. The chronological range that serves as reference extends from 1870 to the 1930s, while the urban territorial scope of this analysis sums up a conspicuous number of new neighborhood projects or restoring intervention plans in the preexisting ones. These schemes are particularly significant to this research because not only do they discuss the agreements stipulated between the City Hall and the Bank of Italy, starting from 1898, but they also deal with a dense concentration of Bank- owned grounds and buildings that characterized the urban area.
