Abstract: THE PUBLIC OPENING OF A RE-DISCOVERED MUSEUM: THE GALLERIA COMUNALE D’ARTE MODERNA E CONTEMPORANEA DI ROMA
The history of the Galleria Comunale d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Roma ( Rome’s Public Modern ad Contemporary Art Gallery) began in 1883 when the local government bought some works of contemporary art on general and historic subjects at the International Exposition. This gave rise to the idea of creating a public modern and contemporary art gallery whose works of art should mostly come, in order to encourage them, from Roman artists and artists working in Rome.
In 1925, the collected works of art were exhibited at the Palazzo Caffarelli, named Galleria d’Arte Moderna (Modern Art Gallery). The collection continued growing and by 1931 it required a new home. The gallery was temporarily closed down in 1938, and in 1963 it was reopened in the Palazzo delle Esposizioni of Rome.
When the Palazzo delle Esposizioni was renovated the exhibition was, again, shut down and transferred to the Palazzo Braschi.
In January 1995, the exhibition was reopened to the public in the ex-convent of the bare-footed Carmelites dedicated to St. Joseph.
The collection is made up of over 4000 pieces created between 1800 and 1900 by the most significant Italian artists.
