Abstract:  A DEVOUT “LIBRARY”: NICOLA ZINGARELLI AND THE COMPAGNIA DEL GESU’ In 1821, the Neapolitan composer Nicola Zingarelli (1752-1837) donated part of his library to the Compagnia del Gesù. The list of the volumes that was drawn up by a notary for this occasion is an interesting document on the circulation of religious books in non ecclesiastical spheres. In fact, the collection was mostly made up of religious books, revealing a doctrinal preparation and historical- ecclesiastical interest, although quite outdated. Zingarelli’ s gift indirectly helped the Church and the intransigent Catholics to reconstruct the ecclesiastical libraries after the losses they underwent during the revolutionary and Napoleonic eras.
