Abstract:  THE RACIAL LAWS OF 1938 AND THE JEWISH ARTISTS IN ITALY The research of this project has the task to evaluate if and in what measures “the provisions for he defense of the race” issued in 1938 have interfered, besides being a violation of the rights of man, in the work of the Jewish artists in Italy. Once the political set up outlined, the artistic institutions, too, suffered repercussions from within. Lacking specific official regulations in regards to the figurative arts, all research bases itself upon controversies (and general consensus) developed around the organizational apparat6us that managed art exhibits, as well as taking into consideration directives and orders coming from individual supporters of the regime. An in-depth case study pays homage to Antonietta Raphael and Corrado Cagli, representative of Jewish-origin Italian artists. This research highlights the impossibility of separating the condition of the artist from the social, human and religious one, however greatly differentiated, of the single individuals involved. Hence, the artists’ reaction and their adjustment (or lack of) to the historical period, as the one of every other citizen, came about given everyone’s own sensitivity, identity and personal conditions.
