Abstract: CHURCH OR CAFÉ’ CHANTANT? THE CASE OF S. GIOACCHINO AI PRATI In 1897, the jubilee church of S. Gioacchino ai Prati, built thanks to an international public subscription set up by the French abbot Antoine Brugidou, was the object of a peculiar judiciary controversy between the Vatican and the abbot who claimed it for himself. The magistrate’s decision which resolved the conflict in favour of the abbot raised a great uproar. The event was followed with great apprehension both by the Catholics, who considered it one of the many usurpations of the pope’s rights, and by the liberals. Although the latter did support the priest who challenged the Vatican, they had never been pleased about his activity in favour of the religious invasion of Rome’s new areas.
