SISTER REPUBLICS In the late 18th century, in the wake of the French Revolution, a number of so called "Sister Republics" were created, following the French model. These Republics were to be found in Italy (the Cisalpine, Ligurean, Roman and Neapolitan Republics), Switzerland (the Helvetic Republic) and the Netherlands (the Batavian Republic). On each of the countries and regions involved these relatively short lived revolutionary Republics left an indelible mark. The story of these Republics has been well told on an individual basis, often with special reference to France. However, the concept of Sister Republics as such has never been studied in depth, nor has the comparison between the sisters been systematically attempted. This international conference proposes to deal with the experiences these Republics had in common, looked at from a comparative point of view. The comparison will focus on various aspects: the new political culture, ideology and iconography; the administrative "translation" of revolutionary ideals; the long term influence and impact of the various revolutions. The aim is to reach a better understanding of the typical late 18th century project of a democratic Republic, its possibilities and limitations, and also its historic legacy.

REPUBBLICHE SORELLE Nel tardo XVIII secolo, sulla scia della Rivoluzione Francese, nacquero un numero di cosiddette "Repubbliche Sorelle", ispirate appunto al modello francese. Ne furono fondate in Italia (le Repubbliche Cisalpina, Ligure, Romana e Napoletana), in Svizzera (la Repubblica Elvetica) e nei Paesi Bassi (La Repubblica Batava). Queste repubbliche rivoluzionarie, che ebbero vita piuttosto breve, lasciarono in ognuno dei paesi e delle regioni coinvolti un segno indelebile. Sulla storia di ciascuna repubblica—presa individualmente o, spesso, in relazione con la Francia—è stato scritto molto. Tuttavia, il concetto di "Repubbliche Sorelle" non è mai stato approfondito.
